10 questions to ask before hiring
- Who will manage the project and communicate with me?
- What exactly is included and excluded?
- Which selections must be finalized before the start date?
- Which waterproofing system will be used?
- How are plumbing and electrical trades coordinated?
- How will concealed damage and change orders be documented?
- What site protection and cleanup are included?
- What workmanship warranty applies, and what are its limits?
- What is the expected sequence and realistic schedule?
- What documents will I receive at completion?
Compare the scope behind each quote
Different totals often reflect different work. Ask each contractor to identify inclusions, exclusions and product allowances for these five areas:
- Preparation: demolition, disposal, access protection, framing and substrate repairs.
- Trades: plumbing, electrical work and responsibility for required approvals.
- Shower and tile: waterproofing, shower base, tile layout and installation.
- Products and finishes: vanity, fixtures, glass, accessories, painting, trim and cleanup. Confirm who supplies each item.
- Changes: written pricing and approval for concealed damage or requested additions.
For a starting point, review our published renovation prices. Your project still needs a site-specific written estimate.
Check experience, insurance and waterproofing
Ask to see completed bathrooms similar to yours and confirm what the contractor did on each project. Check the business name, current insurance and who will coordinate licensed trades.
Compare those questions with real work: browse our completed bathroom renovations in Port Credit and the Port Credit shower before and after. Use the photos to discuss layout, shower entry, storage and finishing details; ask about the preparation and waterproofing behind the finished surfaces.
Ask how the shower base, seams, niches and penetrations will be waterproofed. For a curbless shower, discuss drainage, floor height and structural requirements. The plan should follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions.
Confirm who will check and arrange any municipal or condo approvals required for the work.
Agree on timing, payments and communication
A realistic schedule accounts for selections, deliveries, trade coordination, approvals and curing time. Ask what could change the sequence and who will keep you informed.
The contract should explain deposits, payment milestones, allowances and the final balance. Document changes and agree on their price before the related work proceeds whenever practical.
Warning signs to investigate
- A vague scope or missing business and insurance details.
- Pressure to decide immediately.
- No clear waterproofing plan or responsibility for trades and approvals.
- Product allowances that make the initial total look artificially low.
- Major changes without written pricing, or promises that hidden conditions can never affect cost or timing.
