Any Bathroom Journal · Lighting and comfort
Think about the last time your bathroom lighting annoyed you. Perhaps the room felt bright but the mirror area did not work well for getting ready. Perhaps one switch brought every light on when you wanted a quieter evening setting.
A useful lighting plan starts with those small frustrations. The goal is not to add the most fixtures. It is to decide what you want to see, how you use the room and what you would like to control separately.

Describe three everyday situations
Write a few notes about your morning routine, cleaning the room and using the bathroom at night. For each situation, ask:
- Where do I need clear, useful light?
- Which existing shadows or reflections bother me?
- Would I want all the lights on together?
- Where would the controls feel convenient?
- Is there a setting I would use regularly, rather than only in a showroom demonstration?
Take those notes to your planning appointment alongside the vanity, mirror and shower layout. If you have found an illuminated mirror or fixture you like, save its exact model number, not just a screenshot of the style.
Choose the light and dimmer as a pair
“Dimmable” on a box is a starting point, not confirmation that a light will work well with every dimmer. Lutron recommends checking the specific combination against its tested products. If a bulb is not listed, its manufacturer may have compatibility information. See Lutron’s LED compatibility guidance and compatibility tool.
For an integrated LED fixture or illuminated mirror, ask for the manufacturer’s control recommendations as well. Have the installer confirm the relevant model, driver, control method and load limits before ordering. A matching faceplate does not establish electrical compatibility.
Keep a simple selection list: fixture model, location, desired control and any question still awaiting confirmation. It is easier to resolve an unclear specification while the choice is still open.
Separate lighting from ventilation decisions
Bathroom controls can include lighting dimmers, exhaust timers and humidity controls. These serve different purposes. Lutron’s bathroom-control overview is a useful way to explore the options before deciding what you actually need.
Do not assume a lighting dimmer or a ceiling-fan control can operate a bathroom exhaust fan. Ask for confirmation that the exact control supports the selected fan and installation. Availability and requirements vary by product; a brand name alone is not enough.
Review the plan before the walls are closed
Ask to review the proposed fixture positions and switch grouping alongside the room layout. Discuss light placement around the mirror, any separate shower lighting and how the chosen products suit their intended locations. Leave electrical installation and location-specific suitability to the appropriate professional.
The final checklist should identify what is included, who supplies each item and which selections remain outstanding. Bring inspiration, but also explain what you dislike about your current room.
